What is a Hackmeeting?

The hackmeetings are auto-organised/-disorganised events where we socialise and exchange experiences of every kind. It's NOT a party; there are neither organisers nor guests, it's open to anyone who wants to participate; it's dynamic by definition. Each place that hosts a hackmeeting hosts it in a unique way and there are many ways to "live" and conceive a hackmeeting.

It is for all those curious people that wish to share their sills and experiences and live the process of coordination in a participative way among the others. Some workshops require advanced IT skills and some don't; and some are not even about IT.

It consists of presentations, workshops, round tables, and other activities; all this is based on the philosophy of open source and the free distribution of knowledge. But also the defence of cyber-rights, creativity and the implications of technologies in social movements have an important place in these meetings.

The hackmeeting is co-ordinated, discussed and organised by: this wiki (es), that you are reading right now, which we will continue to update; a mailing list (es) and an IRC channel (#hackmeeting) on irc.freenode.org.

If you want to participate please subscribe to the mailing list which forms the open meeting place to organise this gathering.

Who is organising it and why me?

A hackmeeting is about sharing and creating, there is no pay-and-go mindset, if you want to come, you need to know that there is one rule: Participate! DIY and learn to manage your freedom - it is crucial to communicate and cooperate with others - think about it before you act. More important issues are decided collectively (or via the mailing list, or at general assemblies), less important issues are dealt with on personal responsibility. It is about being a part of becoming together something meaningful.

Every year there is a marvellous process of coordination taking place - tones of volunteers (I mean you too!) work hard on a wiki, establish work-groups, task-lists, design, share, create, translate, write manifests, propose nodes... OK, in fact there are never tones of volunteers, that is why it is so important that you think of what you can contribute to this community and what can you do to make it all happen.

Who is paying for it and why me?

Hackmeeting is not about money and so it is free of fees, but at the same time it is supported by its participants. The funds for the materials are usually obtained with the Tshirts sell: shirts of very unique hackmeeting design. However, most of the material is donated or dumpsterdived and donated. Moreover you can contribute in every possible way your imagination can afford!

Who is holding Nodes and why me?

As it was stated before - the hackmeeting is about sharing and participating - whenever whoever wants to share his skills, knowledge or doubts can hold a specific node.

What is a node?

We call a "node" every event organised during a hackmeeting. It may be:

  • Talk/conference
  • Workshops (more participative character)
  • Round tables (360º)
  • Performances (theatre, mobile expositions, Technopagan Ceremony...)
  • Expositions (GPL material, old computers, ingenious inventions, new techniques...)

How can I propose a node?

Every node proposal is commented in the mailing list of the HM: "hackmeeting@sindominio.net"

You need to subscribe to the mailing list and then send an e-mail with the following heading "[node] proposal_name". In the body of the message we suggest to fill-in the following data according to the nature of your proposal:

Information for the public/attendants:

  • Modality

  • Name of the author/facilitator/coordinator
